The Trustees
the EcoCity Trust has a Board of Trustees drawn
from a variety of sectors. Initially the Trustees
were all people involved in the original
programme and concept, but over time it has
expanded to include newer members.
- Vishwas Satgar is the Gauteng Secretary of the
South African Communist Party. He is a labour
laywer by training and has immersed himself in the
quest for socialism and equity. Satgar is well known
in South Africa for his work as the Director of the
Co-operative and Policy Alternative Centre (COPAC)
where he emphasises the use of co-operatives as an
institutional model for deepening democracy and
promoting self-reliant community-led sustainable
development. He has played a significant role in the
EcoCity programme through the development of its
co-operatives and leadership training.
- Langa Zita is a parliamentarian in the National
Assembly and also an active member of the South
African Communist Party. An independent and
brilliant thinker, Zita brings depth and
understanding to the trust on issues of poverty
and social polarity. He is also the convenor of the
South African chapter of the Third World Network
and serves on numerous progressive NGO boards,
including COPAC.
- Enoch Dlamini is an active member of the Trust but
is also an environmentalist in his professional life.
Dlamini has been responsible for assisting more
groups to set up recycling businesses than any other
person in SA. His work with the Plastics Federation
means that schoolchildren learn the value of
conserving this resource and there are now places
where people can bring their plastics to be recycled.
Dlamini is also a past councillor in the previous
Midrand Council and is a resident of Ivory Park.
- Fienie Van Rensburg, also a councillor of the
previous Midrand Council, is a passionate
environmentalist who understands the way
development can play a positive role in solving the
problems of urban living. As a resident in Midrand
and living close to Ivory Park, she has played an
important role in the past few years in bringing
sustainable development into local area plans and
has tirelessly fought for the preservation of
biodiversity in the greenbelt of which Ivory Park is a
part.
- Russell (Goldius) Baloyi is the youngest member
of the Trust and provides the youth-specific focus
that is so important for the programme. He has
contributed immensely to the introduction of
EcoCity concepts to the youth and has ensured
their active participation in a programme that may
not have generated interest in this sector without
him. Energy is his specialty and he is a much
sought after young environmentalist in SA.
- Annie Sugrue is the managing trustee of the
EcoCity Trust. She is also one of the founders of
the programme. Her role is to keep the
programme’s integrity while allowing the organic
nature of the EcoCity Initiative to develop. She has
played an important role in emphasising the role
of women in the programme, also an important
component of its success.
